The Baltimore Orioles show support for closer George Sherrill
I’m back! I’ve been out of town since last Thursday to go be a groomsman in my buddy Jonathan’s wedding (I didn’t lose the ring!), so I’m here to get back to blogging…
I love how the Orioles support their closer. If George Sherrill comes in to finish up a game and does so successfully, all of the team flips the brim of their cap up for the closing hand shake (click for larger pic):
Why, you may ask? Because George Sherrill wears the brim of his cap extremely flat…
The team flips their caps up to look like his. I love it. I love the show of support for their teammates, even if the flat brim look sported by George Sherrill isn’t in style.
To emphasize the team’s us-against-the-world mentality, Sherrill pastes up offending newspaper clippings next to his locker for additional motivation. He has 15 saves to rank second in the major leagues, so it’s apparently working.
The turned-up hats, however, are more fun.
‘We only do it when we win, so it’s pretty good,’ said Sherrill, who started wearing his cap like that in 2003 because he couldn’t bend the bill to fit his head. ‘It’s pretty funny. It has taken on a life of its own. Maybe the fans will take it up.’
Others: Giants closer Alex Hinshaw, now never-to-be-seen-in-the-majors-again Shawn Chacon, Joba Chamberlain, Jay-Z.
